Stadium PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Three Rivers Stadium is a multi-purpose sports facility located City of Pittsburgh neighborhood known as the North Side. The facility is situated at the confluences of the Allegheny Monongahela Rivers which form the Ohio River. The stadium commemorates its sports legends with an adjacent park named for Roberto Clemente Park, and statues of Roberto Clemente, Honus Wagner and Art Rooney Sr., the founder of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The stadium is one of three remaining circular shape designs (Philadelphia, St. Louis & Pittsburgh), which is constructed of concrete reinforced with steel. The steel used in its construction is synonymous with Pittsburgh's heritage, the steel making industry. The name of Pittsburgh's football sports franchise also commemorates our industrial heritage, the Pittsburgh Steelers. The circular shape stadium accommodates the playing fields needs of two professional sports teams the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates. The interior design has moveable seating that changes the configuration of the field requirements of the two sports. The Stadium has a height of 138' at the rim, and has a diameter of approximately 800'. Currently, City & County Officials arc threatening the integrity of the stadium by a proposed demolition scheduled within the next 3 years. Should demolition of this stadium become reality, it would destroy an identity of a region, its people and sports history that has been rich in miles stones since the Stadium's opening in 1970. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE: In 1970, the construction of a multi-purpose sports facility was completed in the City of Pittsburgh's neighborhood known as the North Side. The facility is situated at the confluences of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers which forrn the Ohio River. Appropriately, this facility was named "Three Rivers Stadium" which marks it's identity with the geography, sports teams and the people of Southwestern Pennsylvania.Since the completion, the stadium has been the home of three professional sports franchises; the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Maulers. In the twenty-eight years since it was built, this facility has been rich in sports history. Since 1970, Three Rivers Stadium and the Pittsburgh Pirates have been home of:

Three Rivers Stadium is rich with history and identifies the people of Southwestern Pennsylvania with the world. It is now under threat for demolition, as City & County Officials are moving to develop two new sports facilities that are unneeded and unwanted. These elected officials are going against the will of the people, as the people have spoken on November 4th, 1997 General Election. I am asking to preserve the heritage of Three Rivers Stadium, by giving it the richly deserved designation that is bestowed on sites of "state or national significance" by putting this on the National Register. This will allow the history of this facility to perpetuate, which has been a source of civic pride, national identity and rich with sports historical memories for nearly three decades. |
