Dear Mr. English:

I am in receipt of your communication concerning the recent pay increase for members of the General Assembly, Governor Ridge, cabinet members, and judges. The subject of a pay increase has been discussed in open forum for many months. There were no back-room deals made; it was enacted according to the Constitution of Pennsylvania.

With reference to state legislators, please be advised that this is the first increase since 1987, and it amounts to approximately two percent per year.

The role and duties of the members in the Pennsylvania State Legislature has increased tremendously over the past several decades. It is no longer a part-time position; it has evolved into a full-time occupation often requiring a member to perform his or her duties seven days a week.

I do hope I have been able to allay some of your misconceptions about the pay increase. If you have any further comments and/or questions regarding this issue, please feel free to contact me.

In closing, let me remind you that I and my office staff are available to assist you in every way possible with any state- related problems you may incur. To date we have helped 11,091 constituents with problems ranging from motor vehicle, housing, insurance, taxes, etc.

Kindest regards,

Representative Thomas C. Petrone
